Emergency Air Conditioning for People with Medical Conditions

emergency air conditioning

Nobody wants to be stuck without air conditioning on a hot day, especially in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. High temperatures are a normal part of summer in this part of Texas, and the only way to stay comfortable is to have a reliable air conditioner on duty in your home. When your AC breaks down and you need emergency air conditioning, Rescue Cooling is here to help. But emergency air conditioning isn’t just for comfort — it also saves lives.

How Heat Affects the Body

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that heat causes nearly 700 deaths per year in the U.S. With the advancement of climate change, this number may only grow.

The human body attempts to regulate its temperature and cool itself through two main methods: sweating and breathing. High humidity makes your body’s job harder, because sweat will evaporate from the skin less quickly, and it’s the evaporation stage that cools the body. When a body stops sweating in the presence of extreme heat, it’s a sign of trouble. Once the body gives up in this effort to cool itself, the brain is in danger of damage from overheating. The kidneys as well as the circulatory and nervous systems may also be affected.

When it gets too hot, your body can suffer from heat exhaustion. Signs of heat exhaustion include:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Heat rash
  • Muscle cramps
  • Dry, red skin
  • Fainting

Heat exhaustion, while uncomfortable, is not life-threatening. Symptoms can usually be managed by resting, applying cool compresses to the body and drinking cool beverages.

Heatstroke is similar, but more serious, as it can eventually cause death. Symptoms of heatstroke include:

  • Body temperature over 103
  • Dry, red skin
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Loss of consciousness

In 2018, a 19-year-old football player at the University of Maryland suffered heatstroke and died during an off-season workout. Reports say that he exhibited symptoms of heatstroke, but coaches and staff did not call for help. UMD settled with the student’s family for $3.5 million. It’s critically important to treat heatstroke immediately. Waiting can be fatal. Even those who recover from heatstroke can suffer permanent organ damage and premature death.

Anyone can suffer heat exhaustion or heatstroke, regardless of how healthy they are. But some medical conditions make some people even more vulnerable to illness or death from exposure to extreme heat.

Extreme Heat Makes Asthma Worse

Heat is a trigger for many asthma sufferers, sending them to seek relief from their inhalers. Heat, combined with high humidity, prevents air from moving around (think still or “dead” air) and this makes for higher concentrations of pollutants.

The air quality is often also lower in summer, especially in big cities like Dallas/Fort Worth. Crowded cities in which people are packed together densely make fresh air harder to come by. The heat island affect in Dallas/Fort Worth can make it 12 degrees hotter in the city than out in the suburbs.

Heat Affects Lung Cancer Patients

Chemotherapy and radiation are dehydrating, and hot weather exacerbates these affects, especially if treatments cause vomiting or diarrhea. It’s not always easy to rehydrate if you can’t keep liquids down, and such a situation can quickly turn dire. Likewise, if it’s so hot that you’re sweating more than usual, you’re losing fluids this way as well.

Lung cancer patients who have to endure extreme heat must look out for signs of danger, including increased thirst, muscle cramps, fatigue and dark urine.

COPD and Hot Weather

COPD, also known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, makes breathing difficult even in the best of circumstances. COPD patients often suffer from chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

Bronchitis causes inflamed airways, and inhaling hot air makes this condition worse. Emphysema destroys the sacs in the lungs, robbing them of their elasticity and making it harder to breathe. Temperatures above 90 degrees can cause emphysema to flare up.

Heart Conditions Made Worse by Heat

Many of your bodily functions depend on your heart. When it’s hot, your heart must beat faster to keep the body cool, and a damaged heart may not be able to keep up. Sweating depletes the electrolytes the heart needs to function.

Heart patients on diuretics or beta blockers may be prone to more serious reactions to extreme heat because these drugs cause dehydration.

Rescue AC Rentals for Retail Stores

In parts of the North and Northeast, many public buildings do not even have air conditioning. But when you operate a retail store in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, air conditioning is a necessity. That’s why when your air conditioning fails, it’s an emergency. Who should you call for temporary air conditioner rental? Rescue Cooling!

Emergency Air Conditioning

Air conditioning did not become widely available in the U.S. until after World War II. It’s hard for us to imagine what life was like in the Dallas/Fort Worth area before that. Undoubtedly, those who can remember it don’t want to return to those days. Here in east Texas, it starts getting hot in April and the dial moves right to unbearable by June. Full relief doesn’t come until November. That’s a long cooling season

Being able to control the climate in your home or at your business is a tremendous advantage. Comfortable temperatures allow you to work better and more efficiently, so that when you relax, you feel more restored.

No AC, No Customers

But even if comfortable temperatures weren’t important to you, they’re important to your clients. No one wants to shop in a store that feels hot, stuffy and sticky inside. Whether your air conditioner is broken or just working poorly, not being able to cool your space will affect your business.

You have likely experienced it yourself — you walk into a store or restaurant and realize their AC isn’t working, and you turn right around and walk out again. It’s not like a brownout or power outage where all business are in the same predicament; when it’s just your AC that isn’t working, your customers will leave and take their business to your competitors. You can’t afford to let this happen.

Further, depending on what type of retail store you own, the lack of air conditioning could damage your products. If you sell cut flowers or live plants, for instance, or candy or chocolate, all of these could be ruined by high temperatures.

Humidity can be just as damaging. It can warp and wrinkle paper products and even affect the operation of your business’s computers. If any of your employees suffer from asthma or other health conditions that worsen in hot or humid conditions, they won’t be able to work without AC.

Waiting for an HVAC Contractor

If you own the building your business is in, you likely have an HVAC contractor that you work with for repairs and routine maintenance. But even the most conscientious contractor may not be able to come help you immediately. You may have to wait hours — or even days — for an HVAC contractor. If you don’t own the building and you rent it instead, you are at the mercy of your landlord who may have the same situation with their HVAC contractor.

HVAC contractors in Dallas/Fort Worth respond to so many emergencies that they sometimes can’t get to them all in one day. But if you wait and do nothing, you’ll lose customers. The solution is temporary air conditioning rental.

Industrial Air Conditioner Rental

When you call Rescue Cooling for HVAC rental equipment, we respond right away. That’s why our name is Rescue Cooling!

We keep two sizes of AC rental units in stock for different sized spaces. We can cool anything from a tiny boutique all the way up to a big box store. We’re known for telling our customers that we can cool any space in under two hours.

We bring the equipment you need to your location, set it up for you and show you how it works. Once your HVAC technician gets to you to make the necessary repairs, call us and we’ll come pick up the equipment.

From past experience, we recommend you wait to call us until you’re sure your HVAC has been fixed and is working properly. All too often the “fix” is unfortunately temporary, and you don’t want more interruptions to your business.

When you get a temporary air conditioner rental from Rescue Cooling, you can keep it for a day, a week, a month or however long you need it. If you have any questions about how it operates, you can call us anytime.

Occasionally, a retail store may need long-term portable AC rental when they are undergoing renovations. The plastic sheeting that contractors hang as a temporary wall is hardly sufficient to keep in your air conditioning. You may need to boost your cooling power with a portable unit.

Usually portable air conditioner rentals for retail stores are not long-term, but we want you to know that should the need ever arise, we’re here for you.

Rescue Cooling: A Full-Service Emergency HVAC Provider

But we don’t just provide emergency cooling services — we provide emergency heater rentals too. While it doesn’t often get prohibitively cold in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, it can. That was proven during the recent weather crisis Texas suffered during which more than 100 people died and thousands more were left in freezing conditions for days or weeks. Many are still without power today.

Rest assured when there is any type of HVAC emergency in the DFW area, you can count on Rescue Cooling to arrive promptly with the equipment you need to stay safe and comfortable. We have technicians on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, because you never know when an emergency will strike.

A/C Broken? Get a Portable Air Conditioner Rental.

As April turns into May, the Dallas/Fort Worth area is getting ready for a long, hot summer. When your home air conditioner conks out and your family is sweltering, rely on the team at Rescue Cooling to get your home cool again. We provide fast and efficient solutions in the form of portable air conditioner rentals.

Summers are hot in Texas, and in Dallas, the average daily high temperature for April is 77 degrees. That may seem bearable, but indoors, the temperature is often much higher than that, and opening the windows doesn’t help much. Once we get to May, the average daily high temperature rises to 84. June is 92, July and August are 96, September is 89 and October is 79.

Medical Concerns

These high temperatures are not just annoyingly uncomfortable — they can be dangerous to your health.

Those with respiratory conditions suffer greatly trying to breathe freely in the heat. Breathing disorders affected by heat include asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, lung cancer, pneumonia and others.

Autoimmune disorders can also flare up in the heat, including lupus, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis.

Excessive heat can also bring on migraines.

The solution is to get your home cool again — quickly.

Room Air Conditioners, ASAP

Quickly is the key word, because the kind of problem that homeowners and business owners in Dallas/Fort Worth can run into is that they call an air conditioning contractor for repairs, but that repair person might not be able to come for hours or even days.

During this time, residents’ health might quickly deteriorate, especially if they are elderly.

But even if you or your family don’t have pressing health concerns, trying to live in a home where the temperature is hovering around 100 degrees is uncomfortably difficult.

This kind of heat makes sleeping almost impossible. When you haven’t slept, it’s hard to get through the day, whether you’re trying to work or you’re taking care of children. The children, in turn, are cranky and hard to manage because they haven’t slept either, and because they are so uncomfortable inside the home.

A/C Rentals in Dallas/Fort Worth

What can you do to stay comfortable while you wait for your AC contractor to come repair your unit?

You may think of going to buy a portable room air conditioner, but that solution is not particularly cost-effective. A room air conditioner costs hundreds of dollars. It’s heavy and difficult to install, and where will you store it once your A/C is repaired? Room air conditioner units are heavy and bulky. If you store it in the garage or a shed, it will collect dust, dirt and bugs, so that if you ever need it again, it may not work.

Plus, using a room air conditioner would mean your family would have to crowd into and sleep in one room.

A better solution is to call Rescue Cooling. We arrive at your home quickly with the emergency air conditioning you need to cool your home. We use:

  • 10,000 BTU portable air conditioners
  • 12,000 BTU portable air conditioners
  • 14,000 BTU portable air conditioners

The size of the portable air conditioner unit we help you select for your home will depend on the size of the space you want cooled. We can install a unit upstairs and another one downstairs if you want to ensure your whole home is adequately cooled.

Temporary Air Conditioning Rental Saves Money

When you call Rescue Cooling, not only are you saving money because you are merely renting a temporary air conditioning unit rather than buying it, but you save yourself time and aggravation too, because we arrive quickly and install the emergency air conditioning for you — you don’t have to go anywhere or do anything.

We tell our customers that we can get any size space cool within two hours. So once you put a call in to our team, it’s only a matter of time before we arrive and make your home comfortable again.

Once your AC contractor arrives and repairs your unit, you can call us and we’ll come back and remove the equipment. This is handy for a number of reasons. First, how many times does a repair person come to your home and, after diagnosing the problem, tell you it’s going to be another day or two before they can get the parts they need to get your system up and running again?

Or what if, heaven forbid, your unit can’t be repaired and you need to get a new one installed? New central A/C units are thousands of dollars, and you might need time to secure funding.

However long it takes to repair or replace your A/C unit, you will be able to use your emergency air conditioning from Rescue Cooling.

Another handy aspect of our service is that it allows you to remain comfortably at home. You don’t have to pack up the kids and head to the mall or the movie theater to cool off. Further, both of those options will undoubtedly cost you money. As will going to a hotel, even for a single night. When you’re traveling, a hotel is fun. When you’re forced to go to one in your hometown because your A/C doesn’t work, then hotels are expensive and inconvenient.

Rescue Cooling provides portable air conditioner rental units for residential and business customers throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth area. We save you time, money and inconvenience. Call us whenever you need emergency air conditioning.
